Pearl River Poker Open Main Event Champion - Schuyler Thornton

We'd like to say a big congratulations to Schuyler Thornton, the winner of the Pearl River Poker Open main event here at the Pearl River Resort in Choctaw, MS.

The 26 year old Thornton, a resident of Corpus Christi, TX, didn't get his start playing poker online like a lot of people his age.  He actually became more enthralled with the sport during his senior year of college at the University of Texas where he would tag along with a friend of his to various home games around Austin.  He said he experienced a steep learning curve, but it wasn't long before he found his way in to higher stakes cash games and parlayed his winnings into bigger live tournaments.  His best live cash was just 2 months ago when he placed 1st in the $400 Event #1 at the River Series event at WinStar Casino in Thackerville, OK, cashing for $77,404.  A second 1st place finish in just 2 months is a great addition to his ever-growing poker resume.

In regards to this event, he finished the Day 1C flight with the overall chip lead and never looked back.  Granted, there were a few rare occasions when he relinquished the lead to another player at the final table, but in the end, he says he stuck to his strategy and played his game and was able to capitalize on a few huge hands to propel him into the champions seat.

Overall, it was a great weekend of poker for everyone involved.
Here are a few shots of the winner for your viewing pleasure.

It's all over!!

All the chips are in the middle on the 10 6 3 flop..

Thuy Djedjos tables K♣ K♠
Thornton tables J10♣

Thornton has Djedjos covered, but his flopped top pair is just slightly behind the over pair of Thuy.

The 9♣ is no help to anyone, but Thornton is still drawing to plenty of outs with the river still to come..

The J♣ on the river gives Thornton 2 pair and the title of Pearl River Poker Open main event champion!

Thuy Djedjos takes 2nd place ($13,277)

Heads UP!

We are now heads up at the Pearl River Poker Open main event!

Follow along here for all the action!

Kelechi Amadi eliminated - 3rd place

On the first hand back from break, the excitement continued.  Amadi and Thornton are heads up to the flop..

Flop: 9 8♠ 7♠

Both players check the flop, and the turn is peeled..

Turn: 5♣

On the turn, Amadi is first to act and makes it 110,000.  After a few moments, Thornton 3-bets to 250,000.  Amadi makes the call

River: J♠

Once the J hits the river, Amadi declares himself all in and gets an insta-call from Thornton.  Thornton tables 10♠ 6♠ for the rivered flush and Amadi just looks in disbelief as he mucks his hand.  After the chips are counted down, Thornton had Amadi slightly covered and now we are heads up for the main event championship.

Kelechi Amadi is eliminated in 3rd place ($8,852)

They're dropping fast!

We are now down to the final 3 here at the Pearl River Poker Open main event.  Barely just 2 hours into the final table, we have had 7 eliminations and things are not slowing down.

A much anticipated 10-minute break is just a few moments away and we will take the time to update the chip counts of the remaining players at that time

BJ Mcbrayer eliminated - 4th place

There is no shortage of action here at this final table.
Unfortunately, BJ Mcbrayer couldn't fade the run good of Schuyler Thornton as Thornton's A-2 bested the A-4 of Mcbrayer J-7-6-3-2 board.

BJ is eliminated in 4th place for a payout of $7,868

BJ Mcbrayer is eliminated in 4th place ($7,868)

Donna Reid eliminated - 5th place

Just as I was updating the bloggosphere on the bust out of Brandon Wallace, we lose our good friend, Miss Donna.  Donna Reid has been eliminated in 5th place as her A-3 couldn't improve to the pocket 7's of BJ Mcbrayer

Donna Reid eliminated in 5th place ($6,885)

Brandon Wallace eliminated - 6th place

A raise from Thornton in position to 55,000 didn't scare off Wallace as he 3-bet shoved his last 250,000.  An insta-call from Thornton and both players stand as they table their cards...

Thornton - A♣ J♠
Wallace - A Q♠

As is always the case (it seems), the sweat was on as the board shows 10♣ 8♣ 6♣
The 9peeled on the turn, but Wallace was still sweating 9 clubs
The 3♣ peels on the river and Wallace gets 4 card flushed to be eliminated in 6th place

Brandon Wallace eliminated in 6th place ($5,901)

Aphideth Nakhoneinh eliminated - 7th place

A shove from Nakhoneinh for his last 185,000 from early position gets a call from BJ Mcbrayer in the hijack. The button and noth blinds fold and BJ has Aphideth covered.

Mcbrayer - 10♠ 10
Nakhoneinh - 2♠ 2

The board runs out J♠ 7♠ 3 J 6♠ and the 10's for Mcbrayer hold to eliminate Nakhoneinh in 7th place.

Aphideth 'Happi' Nakhoneinh eliminated in 7th place ($4,918)

Bruce Taylor eliminated - 8th place

After starting the day with just a little less than average stack, Bruce had a hard time gaining any traction and was eliminated in 8th place for a payout of $3,934

Bruce Taylor eliminated in 8th place ($3,934)

Randy Carden - 9th place

Randy Carden has been eliminated in 9th place for a payout of $2,951

Randy Carden eliminated in 9th place ($2,951)

Noooo Miss Tina!

Just as the post was being submitted about Miss Tina's double up, she is all in again for her tournament life with A-10 vs the A-Q of Thornton.  A dry flop offers little help, but the turned Q puts the nail in the coffin for Miss Tina Carter at the final table.

Tina Carter eliminated in 10th place ($2,360)

Tina Carter

Miss Tina with the double up!

Tina Carter declares herself all in the hijack for her last 52,000 and gets the call from Randy Carden in the BB.

Carter - Q♣ 9♣
Carden - J9

The flop shows 10 8 6, giving Carden a load of outs, but Carter is still in the lead with Q high..

The turn is the 5 and the river is the 9♣.  Carter is able to fade all of those outs on the flop and score a much needed double up at the start of the FT.

Final Table bubble

After the break, just 10 minutes into level 21, we lose Herman Shumaker and Lonzie Nichols in 13th and 12th place, respectively.

With 11 players remaining, we are now on the final table bubble

Lance Jones out 14th

We just lost Lance Jones in 14th place

We are just a few moments away from our first break of this Day 2 restart and we will be coloring up and racing off the 500 denomination chips

13 players remaining

Flush, meet Flush!

In a 4-way limped pot, a flop of 10 7 2 gets an all-in call from Bryne Wilson in the SB. 2 folds and a call ensue, the call coming from Lonzie Nichols.

Wilson - J 8
Nichols - K 9

With Nichols holding the 9, Wilson is drawing dead and is sent to the rail in 17th place.

Bubble...Busted

With an all in from Tommy Bishop and a call from the chip leader, Schuyler Thornton, on a flop of 9 6 4, Bishop tables 8 9♠ and Thornton tables 9 10

The turn and river peel A♠ 6, respectively, to give Thornton the edge and send Bishop to the rail on the bubble.

The redraw is now complete and cards are back in the air as all players hear the announcement from Paul that they are IN THE MONEY.

On the Bubble...

Catching the latter half of the action as I reach the table, I see Herb Kelso having all of his chips moved away from him as his J-9 can't hold against the flopped set of 6's for Lonzie Nichols.  That elimination moves us to 19 remaining, with the top 18 paid.

We are hand for hand on the bubble...

Hart to the rail early

Jonathan Hart, who started Day 2 with a little over 10 BB's, got all his chips in the middle pre-flop and is looking for a double up through BJ Mcbrayer.

Hart - K♠ 7
Mcbrayer - 9♠ 9

The board runs out A Q 8 4 3 and the 9's of Mcbrayer hold to send Hart to the rail in 23rd place.

BJ Mcbrayer contemplates calling Hart

Day 2 Has Begun!

Cards are in the air here at Day of the Pearl River Poker Open main event.  25 players advanced to this spot, each one searching for that 1st place finish of $24,588 and a seat in the AnteUp World Championship in August of 2016 at Thunder Valley Casino valued at $1,650.

We will be following along with the action all day, updating chip counts and providing hand histories.  It's going to be a good one!!

DAY 2 - Players/Chip Counts

Thornton vs Bishop... ROUND 2!

I walk up to the table to catch Thornton and Bishop tying up in another huge pot.
All the chips are in the middle pre-flop....  Bishop in for his tournament life with 180,000, Thornton has him covered by about 60,000

Thornton - KK
Bishop - AQ

Much to the chagrin of Thornton, there's an A in the window and Bishop scores the MASSIVE double up, sending him to the resounding chip lead with just over 360,000.

Big stacks duke it out!

They are 5 handed at the table where the two big stacks are sitting.
Action folds around to Thornton on the button who makes it 7000 to go.  Bishop in the SB 3 bets to 20,000.  The BB gets out of the way and Thornton quickly makes the call.

The FLOP: 7♠ 5 2

Bishop starts the betting by making it 20,000, matching his pre-flop raise. With no hesitation, Thornton makes the call

The TURN: 3♦

Action slows as both players check the turn

The RIVER: 9

Bishop checks first and Thornton counts out a bet of 32,500.  Action is back on Bishop who doesn't hesitate in making the call.

Thornton tables 9♣ 9♠ as he proclaims "Yeah I rivered you"
Bishop disgustedly mucks his hand saying "Man, I had better than Jacks there"

Thornton scoops the pot to even further his chip lead.

And then there were 11..

The end of level 14 brings a much needed break for the 11 players remaining here in the last Day 1 flight of this main event.  The two big stacks in the room are at the same table, with Schuyler Thornton holding just over 250,000 and Jay Bishop on his immediate left checking in at 210,000.  This flight will play down to the 10 minute mark in level 18, so we are looking at just about 2 hours left before officially closing out Day 1.

Flight 1B is in the books.. Flight 1C continues

We have reached the end of the Day 1B flight.  The field of 79 only managed to thin itself to a strong 13, so these 13 players will advance to Day 2 which will begin tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:00pm.

Chip counts for all players advancing will be posted once the bag-n-tag is completed.

Flight 1C has reached the halfway point (level 9) with 38 players remaining.  Play in flight 1C will continue until we reach level 18 or until there are 7 players remaining.

Race em' off!

The end of level 16 brings with it a short 10-min break and the race off of the 100 denomination chips.  Still holding on to the chip lead is Kelechi Amadi with over 200k.  Once we come back from break, we will have approximately 1 hour left of play unless we lose 6 players to bring us down to the 12% of the field that would advance to Day 2

2 tables remain..

We are down to 2 tables in the Day 1B flight here at the PRPO main event.  16 players remain but only 10 will advance to Day 2.  Chip counts for the advancing players will be posted once we reach bag time.

Like Father, Like Son

What better way to forge a stronger bond between father and son than to play a poker tournament together?? Such is the case for Austin and Chad Marsh who actually won their way into the main event via the same satellite!  Both played a $125 satellite earlier in the week where the top 5 places earned entry into the main event.  Both Marshes finished in the top 5 and made their plans to enter into flight B together today.  Now, with 21 players remaining, they find themselves seated at the same table with both hoping to fade the last 11 bust outs to advance to day 2.

Austin trying to work his way back from a short stack

Chad, also fairly short stacked, hoping to grind his way back up

Add 62

Registration for the final flight in the Main Event has come to a close and the board shows 62 entries, bringing the three-entry-flight tournament total to 185 entries.

Final Day 1B chipcounts and the overall prize pool  numbers will post shortly.

Thinning the herd..

Here in flight 1B, we have lost just under 70% of the field, as 24 players are vying for one of the 10 spots that will be advancing to Day 2 from this flight.  Play will resume until 10 minutes into level 18 unless 14 more players are eliminated before reaching that point.

Flight 1C making the push!

Flight C saw a total of 17 entries when cards went in the air and just 10 minutes in to level 2, we have seen that number grow to 48 and there's a line at the registration desk.  Registration is still open, and with a starting stack of 20,000, still plenty of time and value to make it before the end of registration at 8:00pm.

Here we go! Flight 1C under way..

Shuffle Up and Deal!

Paul makes the call here at the Pearl River Poker Open main event and the last starting flight of this main event is underway.  29 entries at the start of this flight with more coming by way of the single table satellites still going.  Registration for this flight will stay open until the start of level 5.

Chippin' Up!

Miss Tina Carter has exhibited what we like to refer to in the poker world as "the run good!"  I've had the privilege to run into a few of her victims as they've hit the rail and the sentiment is universal... She has brought her A-game today!  From a few bluffs in early levels to an almost full triple up on a 3-way all in where she flops the 2nd nut flush, she Carter has manager to amass a stack of over 200,000 here in level 11 of this flight.

Keep that 'run good' going, Miss Tina!

Tina Carter

Single table sattys!

We have a few single table satellites running right now for entry into the last flight of this main event.  Buy for the satellite is $125 and each one begins promptly once a full table of 10 is registered.  They won't be running for much longer so make sure to get down here for a cheaper chance to win your way into the main!  Just speak with Miss Heather down here in the Leopard Lounge to get your name on the list...

8 levels in the books

And with that announcement, our second break is upon us.  At the end of registration, 79 players was the final number and we have lost almost 40% of the field, with 48 players remaining here at the start of level 9.
Play will continue today until we have either 10 players remaining OR if we reach 30 minutes remaining in level 18, whichever comes first.

This is a $100,000 guaranteed tournament and we have 123 entries so far between the first 2 flights.
Flight 1C will begin at 6:00pm tonight and we ARE currently running $125 single table satellites for entry into the last flight of this main event.

Not just a poker player!

One of the things I love about what I do is the people I get to meet at every location.  This stop has been no different, especially when I had the privilege of meeting a fellow inventor, Arnold Montgomery.  Montgomery has been a saxophone player since WAY before he could legally play poker!  His tremendous talent and love for his craft led him to develop custom mouthpieces for the saxophone.  His motto, "Play the Difference," has also been an integral part of his poker career.

Hopefully he will bring his sax if he makes Day 2!

Montgomery looks on as the player to his left scoops a big pot

Another dealer birthday!!

It's said that if 30 people are in a room together, the probability of 2 of those people sharing a birthday is well over 50%.   So what is the probability of 2 poker dealers at the same event having birthday's just one day apart??

Well, the math may be pretty daunting, so I will leave that part out..  But what I can say is, it's always a great day when one of your own celebrates a birthday!!!

Happy Birthday Mac Trelles!

'Mac' Trelles and the beautiful Heather Ohlman here at The Pearl River Poker Open

Couples that Poker together, stay together!

I've had the pleasure of watching my new friends from 'across the pond' play in today's early flight.

Colin Surman, from the UK, and Jacqueline Surman, from Australia, might not be seated at the same table, but they maintain a competitive relationship when it comes to poker.  It will be ever-so interesting to see if the Surman duo can bag chips and come back tomorrow for a UK vs. Aussie Day 2!

Colin deep in thought...

...as is Jacqueline!

Watch out for BLACK ICE!

My new friend 'Black Ice' has started the day off right, working his 20,000 starting stack up to just over 48,000 at the start of level 5.  I made sure to get him patched up with the AnteUp Magazine apparel patch to help with a little 'free advertisement'!

The serious stare from the Black Ice!

Registration for Day 1B coming to a close

The clock shows the end of level 4, which means we have a 10-minute break which will close out the registration for this flight.  The board shows 79 total entries here at the end of level 4, so we will see if we catch a few late stragglers before cards are back in the air at level 5.

Remember, if you don't make flight B today, your final chance to get into the main is flight C today which kicks off at 6:00pm this evening.

Also, we will be running $125 single-table satellites throughout the day to give players the opportunity to win their seat into the final flight.

Flight 1B Notables

We have a few familiar faces in the crowd today at the Pearl River Poker Open main event.

Most notably is our friend Tom 'Captain' Franklin.  Captain, as he would prefer to be called, started his poker career in the 70's and has been on the grind ever since.  With an incredible career live earnings of just over $3 million, he is ranked #1 in his home state of Mississippi.  Captains best live cash came back in 2005 at the Fourth Annual Five Diamond World Poker Classic, a $5,150 buy-in tourney in which he took 1st for a prize of just over $434,000.

While this was his best live cash, it most certainly wasn't his most coveted.  In 1999, Captain was able to take down a $2,500 Limit Omaha event at the WSOP, earning himself $104,000 and the ever-so sought after gold bracelet.

Tom 'Captain' Franklin at the start of Day 1B

Another notable here, that is well known here in the Choctaw area, is Jonathan Hart.  Jonathan has amassed a career earnings of $214,000 in live play, with his most notable being a $39,000 score back in January, 2014 at the Million Dollar Heater down in Biloxi, MS

Shuffle Up and Deal!

Cards are in the air here at the Pearl River Poker Open.  The board shows 64 total entries in this $555 buy-in main event.  Just as a reminder, registration does stay open through the end of the first break which is approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes after our start.  If you can't make it to flight 1B, there will be one more chance to fire in to the main with a flight 1C kicking off at 6:00pm this evening.

If you would like to see a copy of the tournament structure, you can view it here:

The 2 minute warning...

We are now just 2 minutes away from the official start of Day 1B here at the Pearl River Poker Open $555 Main Event.  Registration will remain open through the end of the break after level 4 (approx 2hrs 10 mins).  Players are starting the day with a 20,000 chip stack and staring at a great structure with 30 minute levels until level 15 when they jump to 40 min levels.

6 players advanced from the Day 1A flight and we are looking for an even bigger turnout here for Day 1B and 1C.

Updates and chip counts will be posted here throughout both flights today, so stay tuned...

Late registration for both flights runs for two hours, through the end of Level 4.

Day 1A Final Chipcounts

Here are the final chip counts for the 6 players who advanced from Day 1A to Sunday's Day 2 in the Pearl River Poker Open Main Event.  Day 2 start time is at 1:00pm on Sunday, October 11th.

Day 1B flight starts at 12:00pm on Saturday, October 10th
Day 1C flight starts at 6:00pm on Saturday, October 10th

Name City Chipcount

Roger Bice Tuscaloosa, AL 176,500
Mousey Davis Jackson, TN 156,000
Bryce Taylor Tchula, MS 139,000
Randy Carden Birmingham, AL 127,000
Bryne Wilson Tuscaloosa, AL 83,500

That's a Wrap

Day 1A has come to a close with 6 players moving on to Sunday's Day 2.

It is bag-n-tag time, we'll have names and official chip counts for you in a few moments

Carden with a HUGE double up

Blinds are at 1500/3000 with a 400 ante...

The action folds around to Chris George in the 5 seat and he raises to 9,000.  Bryne Wilson is on the button in the 7 seat and makes the call, as does Randy Carden in the 8 seat, and the BB folds.

THE FLOP: A10♣ 5♠

Carden leads out from the SB for 15,000.  George quickly 3-bets to 40,000 and Wilson promptly folds.  With the action back on Carden, he cautiously counts out his chips before making the call of 40,000.

THE TURN: K

Carden shoves his last 78,000 and gets a snap call from George.

George tables A K♠
Carden tables K♣ J♠

THE RIVER: Q♣

Dejected, George has to get up and leave the table as Carden hits his 4 outer on the river to make broadway and shoot himself to the chip lead with 230,000. George is left with just shy of 50,000.

And then there were 10...

After losing James Kizer, we will redraw and combine the remaining 10 at a single table.  10 players will now compete to see who will be the final 6 bagging chips for the Sunday, Day 2 restart.

The Snow has melted at Pearl River...

With the blinds at 600/1200 and a 200 ante, Tara Snow made it 2,600 to go from the cutoff, leaving 12,000 behind.  The button, Stoney Jentzsch, eyes her remaining stack from the 1 seat and announces a raise of 5,700.  Both blinds fold and the action is back on Snow who insta-shoves her remaining 12,000 only to get an insta-call from the Jentzsch.

Snow - AA
Jentzsch - A♠K♠

The flop shows J 10♣ 8♣
The turn is the K
The river is the K♣ which gives Jentzsch the trips and sends Snow to the rail.

Jentzsch - 37,500
Snow - eliminated

Snow Still alive!!

Tara Snow announced herself ALL IN for her last 8,700 from UTG+2 and received a hesitant, but amused call from The CAPTAIN himself, Tom Franklin.

Snow tables K♣J♦
Captain tables A♥8♥

The FLOP:
A♦ J♥ 10♣

The turn brought a major improvement for Snow as the K♦ fell, leaving The Captain drawing only to an 8 for the knockout or a Queen for the chop.

The river was a 3♣, giving Snow the full double up and leaving The Captain with 33,700

And with that, we are now on a 1-hour dinner break.

Tara Snow elated after her full double up before dinner break

Anddddd we're BACK!

Back from our second break of the day, the blinds now sit at 400/800 with a 100 ante.  Our friend Randy Carden is holdin' down the 2 seat at Table 17 with a massive stack of 94,000, which equates to over 10% of the chips in play.   We'd say he's in comfortable spot with just 30 players remaining

Randy Carden seems pretty relaxed as he holds onto a comfortable chip lead here in Day 1A

The end of the break also signaled the start of our latest single table satellite.  If you are still wanting to play the main event, the $125 single table satellites will be continue to run throughout the day.  Just contact Miss Heather over here in the Leopard Lounge to get registered.

Players preparing for the start of the single table satellite

Almost break!
