Pearl River Poker Open Main Event Champion - Schuyler Thornton

We'd like to say a big congratulations to Schuyler Thornton, the winner of the Pearl River Poker Open main event here at the Pearl River Resort in Choctaw, MS.

The 26 year old Thornton, a resident of Corpus Christi, TX, didn't get his start playing poker online like a lot of people his age.  He actually became more enthralled with the sport during his senior year of college at the University of Texas where he would tag along with a friend of his to various home games around Austin.  He said he experienced a steep learning curve, but it wasn't long before he found his way in to higher stakes cash games and parlayed his winnings into bigger live tournaments.  His best live cash was just 2 months ago when he placed 1st in the $400 Event #1 at the River Series event at WinStar Casino in Thackerville, OK, cashing for $77,404.  A second 1st place finish in just 2 months is a great addition to his ever-growing poker resume.

In regards to this event, he finished the Day 1C flight with the overall chip lead and never looked back.  Granted, there were a few rare occasions when he relinquished the lead to another player at the final table, but in the end, he says he stuck to his strategy and played his game and was able to capitalize on a few huge hands to propel him into the champions seat.

Overall, it was a great weekend of poker for everyone involved.
Here are a few shots of the winner for your viewing pleasure.

It's all over!!

All the chips are in the middle on the 10 6 3 flop..

Thuy Djedjos tables K♣ K♠
Thornton tables J10♣

Thornton has Djedjos covered, but his flopped top pair is just slightly behind the over pair of Thuy.

The 9♣ is no help to anyone, but Thornton is still drawing to plenty of outs with the river still to come..

The J♣ on the river gives Thornton 2 pair and the title of Pearl River Poker Open main event champion!

Thuy Djedjos takes 2nd place ($13,277)

Heads UP!

We are now heads up at the Pearl River Poker Open main event!

Kelechi Amadi eliminated - 3rd place

On the first hand back from break, the excitement continued.  Amadi and Thornton are heads up to the flop..

Flop: 9 8♠ 7♠

Both players check the flop, and the turn is peeled..

Turn: 5♣

On the turn, Amadi is first to act and makes it 110,000.  After a few moments, Thornton 3-bets to 250,000.  Amadi makes the call

River: J♠

Once the J hits the river, Amadi declares himself all in and gets an insta-call from Thornton.  Thornton tables 10♠ 6♠ for the rivered flush and Amadi just looks in disbelief as he mucks his hand.  After the chips are counted down, Thornton had Amadi slightly covered and now we are heads up for the main event championship.

Kelechi Amadi is eliminated in 3rd place ($8,852)

They're dropping fast!

We are now down to the final 3 here at the Pearl River Poker Open main event.  Barely just 2 hours into the final table, we have had 7 eliminations and things are not slowing down.

A much anticipated 10-minute break is just a few moments away and we will take the time to update the chip counts of the remaining players at that time

BJ Mcbrayer eliminated - 4th place

There is no shortage of action here at this final table.
Unfortunately, BJ Mcbrayer couldn't fade the run good of Schuyler Thornton as Thornton's A-2 bested the A-4 of Mcbrayer J-7-6-3-2 board.

BJ is eliminated in 4th place for a payout of $7,868
